چکیده

We propose a class of synthetic optical materials in which the refractive index satisfies n(−x) = −n∗(x). We term such systems antisymmetric parity-time (APT ) structures. Unlike PT -symmetric systems, which require balanced gain and loss, i.e., n(−x) = n∗(x), APT systems consist of balanced positiveand negative-index materials. Despite the seemingly PT -symmetric optical potential V (x) ≡ n(x)2ω2/c2, APT systems are not invariant under combinedPT operations due to the discontinuity of the spatial derivative of the wave function. We show that APT systems can display intriguing properties, such as spontaneous phase transition of the scattering matrix, a flat total transmission band, and a continuous lasing spectrum.

Observation of zeroth-order band gaps in negative-refraction photonic crystal superlattices at near-infrared frequencies.

We present the first observations of zero-n[over ] band gaps in photonic crystal superlattices consisting of alternating stacks of negative-index photonic crystals and positive-index dielectric materials in the near-infrared range. Guided by ab initio three-dimensional numerical simulations, the fabricated nanostructured superlattices demonstrate the presence of zeroth-order gaps in remarkable ...

Negative refraction without negative index in metallic photonic crystals.

It is shown that certain metallic photonic crystals can enable negative refraction and subwavelength imaging without relying on a negative effective index. These metallic structures are very simple in design and appear straightforward for fabrication. Their unusual electromagnetic response should provide an interesting comparison with the metallic left-handed materials.

Enhanced the Complete Photonic Band Gaps for Three-Dimensional Photonic Crystals Consisting of Epsilon-Negative Materials in Pyrochlore Arrangement

In this paper, the properties of photonic band gaps (PBGs) for three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals (PCs) composed of isotropic positive-index materials and epsilon-negative materials with pyrochlore lattices are theoretically investigated by a modified plane wave expansion method. The eigenvalue equations of calculating the band structures for such 3D PCs in the first irreducible Brillouin...

Investigation and Comparison of Light Propagation in Two Graded Photonic Crystal Structures

In this paper, we study two different Graded Index (GRIN) photonic crystal (PC) structures which are named as structure type I and type II. The PC structures are made of the square rod in an air background. To design a GRIN PC structure the lattice constant has been altered in the direction transverse to propagation. We investigated focusing effect             and waveguiding behavior of electr...

Photonic Approach to Making a Left-Handed Material

A new approach to producing a composite material with negative refraction index is demonstrated. It is shown that a photonic structure which consists of two dielectric materials, with positive and negative dielectric permittivities, can support electromagnetic waves which exhibit the unusual electromagnetic property of left-handedness (or negative refraction index). These electromagnetic waves ...
